Episode 51- What Does It Mean to Be ‘Healthy’? A Pediatric Researcher Shares her Findings

Episode Summary

People often look to nutrition research to help them make important decisions about their health. What should I eat? What do I avoid? How can I best improve my quality of life and those of my loved ones? In the past 30 years, there has been a tremendous increase in research on diet and health. How can information from those studies be used to make health recommendations when so many factors are involved? On this episode of the Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Melissa Melough, a Registered Dietitian and Research Scientist at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Melissa completed her dietetic internship at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut and her Doctor of Philosophy in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Connecticut. She has previously worked at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and University of Connecticut in research. Argavan and Melissa discuss the interplay between diet and environment and the impact on child development, the effectiveness of the dietary guidelines for Americans and other public health measures for food and nutrition as well Melissa’s latest research publications, one involving environmental toxin exposure.
