Integrative medicine is a philosophy of care that looks at the child as a whole person- in the context of their birth and medical history, family and household, the community, their emotional well-being, their diet, quality of sleep and physical activity. With acute and chronic illnesses in children skyrocketing, we need to look at the foundation of health- the basics that we all need to prioritize, yet they are often overlooked in conventional medicine. Rather than doom and gloom, we need to support families to empower them to make the best choices for themselves and household members. On this valuable episode of the Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Dr. Joel Warsh aka “Dr. Gator”, an integrative and holistic board-certified pediatrician in Los Angeles, California. Dr Gator grew up in Toronto, Canada and completed a Master’s Degree in Epidemiology and Community Health before earning his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College. He completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. He founded Integrative Pediatrics and Medicine in 2018, where he works today. Dr. Gator has published research in peer-reviewed journals on topics including childhood injuries, obesity, and physical activity. He has been featured in numerous documentaries, films, podcasts, and articles. Argavan and Dr. Gator discuss the difference in integrative vs conventional medicine and why patient care should not be a “one size fits all”; why we are seeing skyrocketing rates of childhood acute and chronic illnesses and what we should prioritize in our everyday lives; and what it means to raise an “amazing kid”. You don’t want to miss this enlightening and compassionate episode for every parent out there!
