Did you know that even low levels of toxic chemicals and pollutants are harmful for children? Do you know that government standards for toxic chemicals fail to protect our children? Numerous studies that show fetal and early childhood exposures to toxic chemicals, including lead, pesticides, mercury, alcohol, PCB's and environmental tobacco smoke have long lasting impact on children. On this episode of the Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Dr. Bruce Lanphear, a Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University and an Investigator at the Child Family Research Institute at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. Dr. Lanphear’s life’s mission is to study the population impact of toxic chemicals and expand efforts to prevent disease. His video, titled Little Things Matter” is a 7-minute project which shows that exceedingly small amounts of toxic chemicals can profoundly affect children. Argavan and Dr. Lanphear discuss his motivation behind “Little Things Matter” and the role of government and industry in negatively affecting children’s health, the role of vitamins from whole foods in offsetting the impact of harmful chemicals and strategies for caregivers and children’s health advocates to reduce their toxic load and voice their concerns to the regulatory agencies to change their regulations for toxins and pollutants. A powerful episode that’s not to be missed!
