Grief and loss can occur in many ways- as a result of an end to something (a death, end of a relationship) or as a result of a change or disruption in the person’s life (moving, divorce). Children and adolescents experience a wide variety of losses throughout their lives such as death, divorce, moving, parental job loss, parental military deployment, breakups, changes in friendships, school transitions, birth of a sibling, or even natural disasters. As parents and caregivers, we may feel particularly helpless in trying to help a child or adolescent who has experienced loss. We may be processing our own emotions and/or confused what to say and how to act. How do we best support our child and ourselves? On this episode of the Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Dr. James Eyerman, an integrative holistic psychiatrist who is based in San Francisco, California. In addition to his private practice, he holds many positions including Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at University California San Francisco Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Touro University in Vallejo, California And Staff Psychiatrist at Napa State Hospital in Napa, California just to name a few. Dr. Eyerman uses a combination of medication, psychotherapy and integrative holistic medicine, encompassing both Eastern and Western healing modalities. Furthermore, he offers acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine, meditation techniques, EMDR and holotropic breathwork. Argavan and Dr. Eyerman discuss manifestations of grief and loss in children and adolescents, different approaches that may be effective in helping young children and teens and tips and strategies for caregivers who are experiencing their own difficult emotions and have to support their child in the process. An intelligent and compassionate conversation!
