According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) as of 2018, almost 1 in 5 children between the ages of 2-19 years old are obese, which is over 14 million children! This percentage is even higher in certain populations, sometimes as high as 1 in 4 children! This means that those children are at or above the 95th percentile weight for height. With the current global pandemic, we are seeing obesity statistics soar to new proportions, resulting in higher rates of physical and mental illness in both children and adults. On this episode of the Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Dr. Leigh Ettinger, a pediatric obesity specialist and founder of Doctor Herbivore. Dr. Ettinger obtained his Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1998 in Boston, Massachusetts, then completed his Pediatric Residency at the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He went on to obtain his Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx. and a Master’s in Science at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York in 2004. Dr. Ettinger is Board Certified in General Pediatrics, Pediatric Nephrology, and Obesity Medicine. He has a certificate in plant-based nutrition from eCornell. His many accolades include The New York Metro Area Top Doctor award for the past 6 years, to name just a few. Argavan and Dr. Ettinger discuss the major factors contributing to the obesity epidemic, the benefits of a plant-strong diet and why a focus on diet and lifestyle today can prevent many of the complications later in life.
