World Refugee Day is on June 20th, 2023. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as of 2021, there were approximately 26.4 million refugees worldwide. More than half of all refugees globally come from just three countries: Syria, Venezuela, and Afghanistan. Furthermore, children make up a significant portion of the refugee population. As of 2021, around 42% of refugees were under the age of 18. On this inspirational episode of the Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Dr. Michelle Dimasi, an author and activist for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. Dr. Dimasi has worked in Afghanistan and the Middle East to deliver services to women, children and ethnic minorities in both the private and not-for-profit sectors. She has held positions on the United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees Round Table discussions, and research adjunct roles at both Curtin University’s Centre for Human Rights Education and at the Swinburne Institute for Social Research. She completed a PhD at Swinburne University in the area of asylum seeker policy. Argavan and Dr. Dimasi discuss the main challenges that refugees face, her book: Hope, Solidarity and Death at the Australian Border: Christmas Island and Asylum Seekers, advice for individuals who want to get involved in refugee advocacy and so much more!
