Episode 1: Understanding Adolescence and the Impact of COVID on Mental Health with Dr. Valerie Roberts

Episode Summary

Mental and emotional health, especially during the pandemic, has brought to the surface many challenges and struggles that families face- social isolation, increased financial stress, fear and uncertainty around the world as reported in the media, school and child care closures, decreased personal space at home combined with increased demands on family members to “keep it together”. On this episode of Baby Steps Nutrition Podcast, Argavan speaks with Dr. Valerie Roberts, a clinical psychologist based in San Francisco, California, who works with children, teens and adults with a focus on adolescence, and separated/blended families on understanding adolescent development and how to bring calm in the household even during challenging periods. She is a parent herself to children ranging from toddler to teen, so she offers both the personal and professional perspective to the conversation. In this episode, Argavan and Dr. Roberts talk about the 3Cs approach to parenting and its impact on the parent-child relationship. They discuss how COVID and the related changes and restrictions that families have been faced with have affected adolescent and mental health. They also talk about how to reframe challenges that parents and caregivers struggle with in order to empower them with tools to create harmony, patience and understanding (yes, it’s possible!).
